Australian Federal Police Seizes Millions in cryptocurrency in Connection to Ghost Platform Investigation
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) recently announced the seizure of AU$9.3 million (US$6.4 million) in cryptocurrency as part of an investigation associated with the mastermind behind Ghost, an encrypted communication platform.
Investigation Details
On September 17, AFP arrested Jay Je Yoon Jung, a 32-year-old suspect, under “Operation Kraken.” Jung, based in Narwee, has been charged with five offences, including supporting a criminal group.
The assets were confiscated after an Analytics specialist within the AFP-led task force decoded the “seed phrase” of alleged accounts. Subsequently, the Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce (CACT) transferred the Crypto Assets to secure storage.
Acting Commander Raven emphasized the AFP's commitment to identifying and restraining “ill-gotten goods,” including cryptocurrencies. "The restraint of these assets showcases the technical capabilities and powers that the AFP, along with our partners through the CACT, can bring to combat organized crime," Raven stated.
According to the announcement, the Crypto Assets were confiscated under the Commonwealth Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, and the CACT intends to have the assets forfeited to the Commonwealth in due course.

This multimillion-dollar seizure is the second associated with AFP Operation Kraken. In a separate incident last month, a Perth man was apprehended for possessing cryptos and properties valued at AU$2 million (US$1.3 million).
The Australian police force has been actively investigating losses resulting from crypto phishing scams. In August, the AFP collaborated with the blockchain Data firm Chainalysis and discovered that approximately 2,000 Australian-owned crypto Wallets had been compromised.
